W&W Public Meeting Permaculture in Practice
Wednesday, February 18, 2009, 6:45 p.m. W&W Public Meeting Join us for our first meeting of the new year, where we'll hear about the system and philosophy of permaculture. Coined from the combination of permanent and culture, the creators of permaculture work with the sun, wind, rain and their own ingenuity to create sustainable places. Living on 7 acres adjacent to the 900-acre Alden Sedge Meadow (McHenry County Conservation District site), Judy, along with husband Jack, are volunteer site stewards working to restore a globally-endangered oak savanna near the headwaters of the Nippersink Creek. They design and lead experiential programs for children, teens and adults on ecological restoration, permaculture and deep ecology. Judy holds a certificate in permaculture design from the Permaculture Institute of Australia and is working towards a certificate in ecological restoration through the McHenry County Conservation District. Judy and Jack put permaculture into practice by integrating nature’s flows and patterns into the retrofit of their home and land, which bears abundant fruits, vegetables, and herbs, while supporting biodiversity. They are recipients of the 2008 Chicago Wilderness Habitat Project Grassroots Conservation Leadership Award. As our minds wander towards the start of spring, take some time to learn more about living holistically and sustainably with the land, no matter the size. Check out Judy's favorite websites to learn more: Click Meetings, or contact Larry Marvet at 847-537-2083 with any questions. Storm Water Patrol Training Workshop
Crystal Lake |
Hosted by Environmental Defenders of
McHenry County
Soil runoff is one of the leading causes of problems in Illinois streams and lakes. Citizens can help monitor construction sites in their areas to prevent this major pollution problem. Trainers from Prairie Rivers Network, Sierra Club and McHenry County Soil & Water Conservation District will teach participants how to recognize proper erosion prevention and sediment capture techniques for construction sites. Clean Water Acts rules which govern construction sites will be described, as well as how to work with local governments and soil & water conservation districts to solve problems at sites in your area. Participants are encouraged to team up with others from their local environmental group to form a patrol to monitor sites during the next construction season. Topics Covered Include:
What We Provide Participants: The training provides the tools needed to evaluate whether construction sites are using acceptable storm water management practices. After the training, call Prairie Rivers Network (217-344-2371) any time with questions you have about storm water or specific construction sites. What We Ask of Participants: We ask that participants take the information we provide and visit construction sites in their community to assess whether proper storm water controls are in place. If you would like to attend this free half-day training, RSVP by March 9 to: |

W&W Public Meeting Pharmaceuticals In Our Waterways
Cecily Smith, Prairie Rivers Network Wednesday, March 25, 2009, 6:45 p.m. W&W Public Meeting Unused pills that are flushed down the drain end up in our local streams and lakes. Pharmaceuticals in our waters are dangerous for the fish and other wildlife that live there. Knowing this, Illinois residents want to take steps to properly dispose of their unwanted and unused medications. Do you know what you should do with pills you don't take? Pharmacies are crucial partners in efforts to create convenient and consistent collection programs. Is there have a permanent pharmaceutical collection facility in your area? Learn more about what you can do to keep drugs out of our waters ». Click Meetings, or contact Larry Marvet at 847-537-2083 with any questions. Phosphorus Fertilizer Bans in Lake County Kelly Deem Mike Adam, Dave Brown Vernon Hills |
UDPREP Brown Bag Briefing
Kelly Deem and Mike Adam, Lake County Health
Department, Lakes Management Unit;
In recent years, there has been a strong movement in the Midwest to ban phosphorus in lawn fertilizers to protect water resources. Numerous lake associations, cities, and counties in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin have enacted such bans. Minnesota became the first to create a statewide ban in 2005. Similar bills are currently pending in the Michigan and Wisconsin legislatures. Illinois, however, has been slow to enact similar changes. In lake-rich Lake County, homeowners and municipalities are starting to take notice and Sierra Club led the way by prompting Antioch to adopt the first P Ban ordinance in the state. Other municipalities have followed. This presentation will focus on the processes which communities in the county are using to address phosphorus problems, as well as some of the challenges they are experiencing. Brown Bag Briefings are casual lunchtime get-togethers featuring interesting speakers on timely topics, updates on UDPREP activities, and news from across the watershed. An open session of UDPREP's Planning Committee will follow the briefing. Everyone is welcome to participate in this meeting of advisors who help plan UDPREP's activities. Free
RSVP: By March 24, 2009 to rsvp@upperdesplainesriver.org or call Jill @ (847) 561-2294.
