Woods & Wetlands

2007 Meetings

You could stay home and watch another murder mystery drama on TV - or you could find out what the local Sierra Club W&W Group is doing to protect the most biologically rich territory in the state of Illinois ...

All are invited to our W&W Public Meetings. You'll meet members, learn a little about our conservation work and hear a short talk by a specialist on a current topic. Map:

At Conservation Meetings, members plan campaigns to protect our local environment. We need your help to take on problems where you live!

Planning Meetings are open to all members interested in the operation and policies of the W&W Group. Those who would like to address the Executive Committee may e-mail the Chairman below to get on the agenda, or just to reserve a seat.

See our Community Calendar, listing environmental events offered by organizations in our territory.

Balancing Preservation and Growth

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007, 6:45 p.m.
Vernon Area Library

W&W Public Meeting

Population continues to grow at a rapid pace in Lake County, home of the state’s highest concentration of threatened and endangered species. Sarah Surroz will discuss new efforts—based on proven strategies—to balance growth with preservation of natural areas and farmland. The benefits of open space are numerous and we'll learn about the conservation easement— an increasingly popular tool for preserving America’s open lands.

The Liberty Prairie Conservancy is a nonprofit organization established in 1995 by citizens wishing to preserve the scenic landscape of central Lake County. Building upon the success of that vision, the organization expanded its mission county-wide in 2004.

Ms. Surroz has worked in the conservation field for over 20 years, including 13 with the Lake County Forest Preserve District. Sarah has a bachelor of science degree in natural resource management and biology from the University of Wisconsin and serves on the board of directors for Chicago Wilderness Magazine.

Doug Taron, Curator of Biology, Notebaert Nature Museum

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007, 6:45 p.m.

W&W Public Meeting

The orange and gray Swamp Metalmark butterfly is a beautiful insect found only in very specific habitats—and was pushed to extinction in Illinois just 20 years ago. Doug Taron will tell us about his work with the Chicago Academy of Sciences to return this spectacular bug to Illinois through habitat restoration, captive breeding and wild release.

Besides his curator job, Taron manages “Butterfly Haven” at Chicago's Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the only permanent year-round exhibit of live butterflies in Illinois. He has a Ph. D. from Northwestern University and has been working in Illinois butterfly conservation for many years.

See more about it at The Notebaert Museum.

W&W Public Meeting

Hawks and other birds of prey are all around us in Northern Illinois. Some live here year-round and many others are migratory. Vic Berardi will speak to us just as the fall journey of these majestic birds begins, showing us how the migration unfolds and what to expect.

“And all those who see me and all who believe in me carry my freedom up here when I fly ...“
The Eagle and the Hawk,
John Denver

Mr. Berardi is a long time hawk and activist, working to protect our winged wildlife. Besides Hawk Watch, Vic is a board member of the Hawk Migration Association and Central Flyway Editor for Hawk Migration Studies. See more about it at Hawks In the Sky.

The 17 Year Return of the Locusts

Allison Lehnen, LCFPD

Vernon Area Library
W&W Public Meeting
Wednesday, April 18th, 2007, 6:45 p.m.

This summer our usual band of singing cicadas will be joined by an enormous army of the 17 year, “periodic” cicada, sometimes called 17 year locusts. The northern Illinois brood is scheduled to emerge this year, when the ground warms to 65 degrees, with up to a million of these red eyed insects per acre! We’ll prepare you for this magnificent—and LOUD—event at our next Sierra Club meeting when we hear from Lake County Forest Preserve educator Allison Lehnen. Learn what to expect when these bugs crawl and fly into your neighborhood.

An Amazing Brood Of Cicadas Will Emerge in a Neighborhood Near You!

Green Cars, Green Fuels, Green Future—
How To Decide?

Dr. Stephen Ciatti, Argonne National Laboratory

W&W Public Meeting
Thursday, March 22, 2007, 6:45 p.m.
Byron Colby Barn, Grayslake

Hybrid, electric, diesel, fuel cell; Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, Ford Escape; ethanol, biofuel, E80—how can you keep track? If you could, you’d need a rocket scientist to make sense of it all, especially from an environmentally sensitive viewpoint.

Not exactly a rocket scientist, Dr. Ciatti works at Argonne National Lab exactly on these transportation technologies and will help us to cull fact from fiction. And the facts will surprise you!

Missed it? These will be posted here until April 20th. Visit Argonne anytime.

Lake Michigan

Judy Beck, US EPA

Vernon Area Library

W&W Public Meeting
Wednesday, February 28th, 2007, 6:45 p.m.

More information at:
Chicago Metropolitan Area for Planning (CMAP)
and
Lakewide Management Plans (LaMPs)

As the source of our weather, water and history, Lake Michigan is the essence of where we live—but what do we really know about it? Each of us lives within 20 miles of this lake, fifth largest in the world with 1,180 cubic miles of water, and by far largest in the United States. But every summer we read of contaminated beaches, and almost every month that we’ve reached a pumping limit for the Lake. At our first meeting of the new year we’ve invited Great Lakes Expert Judy Beck to speak with us. Ms. Beck leads the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Lake Michigan Initiative and will update us on the most important lake in Lake County.
