Re:     Proposal to Fill Wetlands in Lincolnshire

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued a public notice proposing the filling of 12.85 acres of wetlands for a commercial development in the Indian Creek watershed at Half Day Road and Milwaukee Ave.

I am writing to you to express my opposition to this proposal. There are two reasons I feel the Village should not support this action.

  1. Wetlands serve as an important sponge to help reduce flooding. I and many other Lincolnshire residents living on Lincolnshire Drive are directly at risk of flooding from Indian Creek. During storms Indian Creek becomes a raging river, dumping water into the Des Plaines. Regardless of compensation, I believe filling of natural wetlands only puts us at additional risk. Please do not allow Lincolnshire residents and Lincolnshire homes to face additional flood risk.
  2. We cannot afford to lose more wetlands because of their natural value. We have wiped out most of the wetlands in Lake County already and the loss to the environment is enormous. 12.85 acres are a large loss and are not compensated for in any way. These wetlands are important for filtration of pollutants and habitat for plant and animal species. In my opinion, they are irreplaceable.
I hope this issue is one that will be discussed at our Town Meeting on Thursday night.

Thanks for considering my opinion.
