Phosphorus Fertilizer Bans

Antioch is the first village in Illinois to adopt a Phosphorus ban, but far from the first in the country. When Antioch needed an example, Twin Lakes, WI sent us theirs, and we forwarded it to Antioch. Dane County WI also has one, as well as the entire state of Minnesota. Please use these to encourage your village or city to do the same.

Antioch's Village Board unanimously passed the ordinance after the second reading. The discussion reviewed availability of P-free fertilizer at local stores, the educational campaign planned, and eventual enforcement.

Village Board Meeting

Antioch

Audio From the Meeting

This testimony makes the case and sets the stage for banning Phosphorus in fertilizer not only in Antioch, where many lakes are impaired by excess levels, but in all villages, as well as the County. Antioch unanimously passes a motion to draw up an ordinance banning Phosphorus in lawn fertilizer at the end of the second recording!

As Antioch made plans to expand their Waste Water Treatment Plant to accept sewage from new development, and release more Phosphorus to Sequoit Creek, we made them aware that Lake Marie directly downstream was already impaired because of Phosphorus, and urged them to find ways to reduce it. This proposed ban is only one of the actions resulting from discussions with village staff over several years.
