On flat water
On flat water the bow paddler is primarily responsible for propulsion and pace, and should know the forward stroke. the bow paddler is primarily responsible for propulsion and pace, and should know the forward stroke.
On flat water the stern paddler is primarily responsible for steering, and needs to know: forward, back, sweep and J strokes the stern paddler is primarily responsible for steering, and needs to know: forward, back, sweep and J strokes.

On a river, in addition to flat water skills
On a river, besides providing propulsion, the bow paddler should know: V's and strainers; plus back, fend and draw strokes. the bow paddler should know: V's and strainers; back, fend and draw strokes.
On a river, besides steering, the stern paddler should know: V's and strainers; ferry; fend and draw strokes. besides steering, the stern paddler should know: V's and strainers; ferry; fend and draw strokes.
