Learn about the river on this half-day out-and back canoe trip. We will leave from the Rt. 60 canoe launch and travel up the Des Plaines river, stopping for lunch at Oak Springs canoe launch. Canoeing experience required. Rental canoes are reservable at the launch from Offshore Marine in Vernon Hills (847-362-4880) for $40/canoe, including life jackets and paddles. |
This is outing requires paddlers to have the ability to power, accurately turn and position a canoe in slowly moving water for several hours, and will begin with a review of stream paddling skills on shore. Participants must fill out the On-line Questionnaire and be approved by the leader in advance. As indicated in the Rating, weak, unconditioned or unskilled paddlers will find this outing challenging. Use the questionnaire to help you consider whether this trip is right for you. Print and sign the Liability Waiver and bring it to the trailhead. Trip cost includes canoe rental, reduced if you bring your own. Carpooling encouraged. Please sign up, and indicate whether you have a canoe, an open seat, and a transport vehicle. Plans will be made accordingly.

Hike the Cowles Bog trail of the Indiana Lakeshore with PhD botanist Joy Marburger, who conducts research in the area. Marburger will provide interpretation of one of the most diverse plant communities in the United States. The 3-mile trail stretches through wetlands, woods and ends at a remote Lake Michigan beach. Bring a sack lunch. We will meet at 11 a.m. If the weather is warm enough and time allows, bring your swimsuit for a dip in the lake. Leader is Barbara Bell. |
Pre-approval by the leader is required. Prepare to sign liability waiver at the trailhead. It's a 2 hour trip from W&W, so carpooling is strongly encouraged. Or, avoid the Ryan and take the historic South Shore Line from Millennium Park (Chicago) to Dune Park (Chesterton).
