Sun Lake Stewardship, December 2001 !

Before

Facing W, at the NW edge of Sun Lake, just E of Sequoit Creek.

The previous three stewardship outings have cleared most of this area. It's always more work than it looks.

After

Only a few buckthorn remain to be cleared next time.

Plans

This will be the site for a bonfire during our March stewardship outing.

Plowed

The farmer turned over the soil since our last visit. We question whether the small fee the FPD gets from the farmer is worth the wind and soil erosion that this bare soil will suffer in the spring. We would prefer to have alfalfa sown to supply food for the cranes, while blocking invasive weeds.

We are also alarmed that the "farmed wetlands" on the plateau to the left of these trees were replowed. In the past, plowing has been followed by herbicide spraying, with overspray into valuable wetlands. We need to stake out larger buffers and begin returning the farm fields to prairie and savanna.
