For July, 2001
|
|
Use this convenient form to sign up. When I've approved you for the
outing, your initials will appear in the table below.
To hold your reservation, print and fill out this liability
waiver, and send it to me with the trip Fee. Any surplus will be returned.
Cancellations
after cut-off date can result in loss of deposit, to cover trip costs.
To discourage frivilous reservations, deposits (50%) are non-refunded after
wait-list starts, and will go to wait-listed participants.
Trip Rules:
-
Stay with the group.
-
Be courteous to others.
-
Observe minimum impact practices.
-
No firearms, audio players, or pets
TRIP OVERVIEW
We'll rent canoes from a local outfitter. We'll paddle down a 2 hour
section with a 1 hour lunch break in the middle.
LOGISTICS
REQUIRED GEAR
-
River shoes that can be worn in the water, low top old gym shoes are fine.
-
You must bring a set of "Dump clothes" in a dry bag. This is simply an
extra set of clothes in case you get soaked for whatever reason. Avoid
blue jeans, and other heavy cotton fabrics that will not dry out on the
water. If you don't have a dry bag, bring a cloth bag lined with two plastic
bags.
-
Hat, sunglasses, eyeglasses strap, sunscreen, & lip balm. The sun can
be very intense and there is little shade.
-
Bug repellent. You might consider trying one of the natural types and avoid
toxic DEET. (DEET has been know to cause nerve damage and it also melts
plastic.)
-
Lunch for Saturday. NO GLASS CONTAINERS.
-
Water for use in the canoe (bottled-water bottle is fine).
-
Personal medicine. Please let us know if you have a condition that we should
be aware of.
PROTOCOL
-
Don't pass the lead canoe.
-
Keep yourself well hydrated, don't wait to drink until you are thirsty.
Also protect yourself from the sun.
-
Know and avoid poison ivy.
-
Practice minimum impact camping. The Sierra Club was created to protect
our wild lands. Take nothing but memories, leave nothing but footprints.
-
Good latrine practices involve going at least 100 feet inland from the
water, when possible, and depositing your waste in a shallow hole which
you then cover up. When you wash up, try to do so away from the river.
Last time there was a portapotty at the park. If not, we'll probably take
a compact portable toilet.
ALTERNATE PLANS
In case the weather turns sour, we'll cancel the trip between 4 and
24 hours before it starts.
TRAVEL
Carpooling makes sense from an environmental, economic and social point
of view. It is the participant's responsibility to make travel arrangements,
and we encourage you to contact other participants.
When you fill out and send the form above, I'll put your initials in
the table below. When you've mailed in the liability waiver and fee (write
check to Sierra Club), I'll put an X in the "Applied" column, and when
I've approved you for the outing, I'll put a number in the "Approved" Column.
