search tips

The Chapter Search option is provided to aid in finding information across the Chapter site and all Group sites that maintain their own Web site presence. The search utility offered here is a service of Atomz.com, a company that specializes in offering search capability through the use of their indexing and search engine.

Submitting a search word or phrase will result in a list of Web pages containing the words in  your request. Selecting one of the results pages will display its contents. If the content is not the result wanted or expected, use the browser's back-button to return to the search result list and try another item.

Note that results listed toward the top of the list are determined by the search utility to have the highest probability of containing the information requested based on the word(s) you entered. If the search result list is very large, try entering another search word or phrase to narrow the results. Below are the ways to control your search results based on the format of entering your request. Experimenting with these may help find the information you are seeking:

Basic Tips:

  • Enter  a singe word in all lower case, such as water -- to find documents that contain the word water and words with any prefix-and-water, such as de-water, ground-water, etc.

  • Enter multiple words enclosed in quotes, such as "water sample" -- to find  documents that contain only adjacent combinations and variations of both water AND sample, such as water samples, water sampling, sample water, etc.

  • Enter a word in upper and lower case, such as Water -- to find only documents with the same case combination; usually to find occurrences of the word in titles. Therefore, use all lower case for most searches to avoid accidentally narrowing the search.

  • Enter a single word ending in an the wild-character asterisk, such as water* -- to find documents containing water and suffix variations that begin with water, such as  watering, watershed, waterways, etc.

  • Enter multiple words not enclosed in quotes, such as water sample -- to find  documents that contain water OR sample and any variations on them.

Advanced Tips:

  • Enter words prefixed with the plus + or minus - sign, such as +conserv  -water -- to find documents that contain variations on the term conserv but do not contain the word water -- possibly to find conservation info other than related to  water conservation.

  • For those familiar with Web page construction, enter words prefixed by a field type stored in the search index database, such as:
    title:water  or  body:"water sampling"  or  url:wetlands  or  desc:"Shawnee WIdlerness"  or   keys:membership
