Bluestem update: We won on Off Road Vehicles!
Dear Bluestem activists,
Your calls to state representatives, coupled with a little luck, have resulted
in the defeat of two environmentally destructive off-road vehicles bills. Thank
you for your hard work!
SB 1521 would have allowed off-road vehicles and all-terrain vehicles into our
most sensitive state parks. SB 1804 would have limited money that could be
spent enforcing ORV and ATV rules. Both bills died when the sponsors bowed to
pressure from the governor and refused to call the bills for a vote.
These bills passed 99- 19 in the House last spring and by a similar margin in
the Senate. The governor vetoed them last summer. The General Assembly appeared
ready to override the governor’s veto, however, when a massive call campaign by
Sierra Club members such as yourself and pressure from the governor stopped
them.
ORV riders are sure to bring up similar bills next year, so expect the issue to
come back.. With your help, we will win again.
Sincerely,
Linda Sullivan and Carol Squires
