1) What are your best environmental achievements so far?
We recycle, I am outspoken to litterbugs, pick up trash and return carts. I walk/run and rollerblade when I can to get to places. We chose to live near the core of the city and close to our work locations. I have taken over 12 bicycle vacations over the past 20 years. It is the best way to see the world!
2) What environmental issues will you publicly support throughout your campaign?
The goals and objectives of our proposed Comprehensive Plan are very consistent with environmentally friendly principles and I stand ready to support those principles. I would like to continue to promote Urbana's already excellent track record for recycling, as we can probably do even better. It might be fun to have a ward contest..... I would also like to promote more bikepaths, safe walk ways and running paths throughout Urbana. We need to move forward with connecting the core to some of the outer neighborhoods.
3) Why are you interested in environmental issues?
I can't say that environmental issues have been at the forefront of my mind, over the years (i.e. I cannot say I have been an activist), but simply in the interst of future generations it makes sense to consider environmental issues as I live my life.
4) Any personal environmental work, education, groups, hobbies, or habits (e.g. energy efficient home/cars/appliances; reduced consumption/driving; reuse; buy recycled/organic/local; vegetarian)?
I often shop at Strawberry Fields and buy recycled and organic.
5) What are the three most pressing environmental concerns in Urbana?
We have very little shopping in Urbana that is within a walkable or bikeable distance. Continued push on recycling to reduce use of the land fill Parking issues in the campus areas....(too many cars in these neighborhoods due to too many tenants in one house/apt.) I wouldn't call signage a pressing issue, but I think it would be good to have a new and more controlled sign ordinance.
6) What is your opinion about environmental protections in the recently proposed Urbana Comprehensive Plan?
As above, I believe the principles in the plan are environmentally sound, but also promote all types of compatible mobility and prmote appropriate buiness growth opportunities, in the right spots of town.
7) Would you publicly oppose the proposed ring road around Urbana?
No, but I am willing to listen more to the reasons why it isn't a good idea and reconsider based on further input. If not, what would you do to prevent further sprawl and another slow flowing, low quality commercial corridor with desolate buildings? We need to make sure that our incentives are for the areas where we want most to develop business, i.e. the core, neighborhoods and close perimeter. If businesses want to go to the outer ring....we don't incent that. We incent what we want most.
8) What would you do to encourage more varied shopping in central and eastern Urbana (e.g., Philo Road) to reduce sprawl and gasoline consumption?
I support the Philo Road Redevelopment Plan. And, we need to change the perception that Urbana is not business friendly.
9) Would you publicly support policies that discourage sprawl by recovering all infrastructure (roads/utilities) and service costs (schools/fire/police) of expanding into natural areas and farmland?
I don't know enough about this type of proposal and its impact on potential business growth. It seems to me there would be a need for some type of partnership in order to offset additional costs incured by the city.
10) What financial support would you give to create bike/hike trails that link Urbana together?
I would personally contribute to a campaign.
11) Would you support sharing residential streets (walk/bike/drive) that slow traffic in Europe and traffic calming devices for smoother flow?
Sounds good to me, I don't know a lot about this. If you are referring to bike paths on the street, I like those, but I prefer separate ones. I do like the flashing safety lights embedded in the streets to alert drivers to pedestrians. I would like this town to be very pedestrian and bike tolerant. The car always has the upper hand and therefore should defer in all cases to walker and bikers. That is how I try to drive.
12) Would you publicly support ending utility tax discounts for higher consumption and use the revenues as energy efficiency matching funds?
I would like to hear more about this. so, unsure at this point.
13) Would you publicly oppose another nuclear reactor in Clinton?
Unsure, I would need to know more. i.e. Why do we need another one? What are other options that could be considered? How could this effect costs to citizens?
14) Would you publicly support shifting street maintenance funding from property taxes on everyone to gas taxes on actual users?
Unsure, need more info on this one.
15) How much will you increase Urbana's fleet of hybrid cars?
If these are cost efficient and effective from a functional perspective, it would seem to make sense to increase them, but they must be functional as well as efficient.
16) How will you increase Urbana's purchase of environmental products?
Unsure, need more info on options
17) Would you publicly support adopting LEED building codes for energy efficiency in all future city government construction and remodeling?
Unsure
18) Would you support shifting to sales taxes (slowing consumption of imports) from property taxes to keep housing affordable?
Unsure
19) Would you support increasing parking fees for SUVs and pickups?
No
20) Would you support requiring the equivalent of storm doors and windows on rental units to reduce fossil fuel imports?
Maybe, I would like to hear how this would impact rental rates, or if it would.
21) Would you enable residents to use the city's webpage to sign up for emailed newsletters and announcements, saving postage and paper?
That sounds like a very good idea! yes.
22) What would you do to protect the environment in Drainage Districts?
Unsure on this one.
23) Is there anything else you would like to add?
