Description: Day hikes and fall colors in spectacular wilderness areas in Shawnee National Forest southeast of Harrisburg, IL: Garden of the Gods, Lusk Creek, Indian Kitchen & Heron Pond on the Cache River. For photos of the area: http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/shawnee/recreation/photo/east/ and http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/r5/cachervr.htm The mix of trees can provide an unequaled autumn spectrum of color. Maple, gum and dogwood produce brilliant reds, beech dress in yellow, oaks are scarlet, and pines sprinkle the palette with green. Learn "Why Leaves Turn Color". We'll be staying at a local motel. Cost is $135 and includes lodging & 3 breakfasts. Limit 10. Leaders: Paul Silverman (847-392-3433) & Joe Pokorny. Assistant leaders needed.
