Get Outdoors
Since
the first Sierra Club outing in 1901, countless numbers of
participants have been introduced to the joys of our natural world,
and the need to preserve and protect it. Sierra Club outings are a
great way to learn about the environment while enjoying the great
outdoors! For over 100 years outings have been an integral part of
the Club's mission and reflects our motto to actively "Explore,
enjoy and protect the planet."
Local outings are led by certified volunteer leaders from the Illinois Chapter's 15
regional groups. The range of outings is as diverse as our
volunteers' interests. You can choose from day and weekend hikes, camping,
biking, canoeing, bird-watching, winter
cross-country skiing, community service trips and forays into the
remaining natural areas of inner cities. Outings are an opportunity
to discover area trails, rivers and preserves in a safe and
organized way, as well as meet other conservation-minded people and
make new friends in the process.
Register
for a published Illinois outing by contacting its leader directly. Outings
are open to members and non-members alike.
View our IL Outings Calendar, which is updated constantly,
to quickly find an outing of interest in your area.
The club also offers outings at the national and international
level. Search the
National
Outing Catalog or visit the
National Outing Calendar for a global view of national and
international trips offered.
In addition, Chicago Inner City Outings (ICO) provides an outreach program of the Sierra Club, which organizes hiking and camping trips, boating and skiing outings, environmental service projects and other outdoor adventures to young people who might not otherwise have access to these experiences.
