Legislative Session: 95th General Assembly 2008

According to the Illinois DNR, there is a current need of $3 billion to protect places important for our future that are currently unprotected.  With only 1% of our state protected for future generations, Illinois ranks last in Midwest in acres protected per capita.

The Illinois General Assembly last approved capital funding for land acquisition in 1999, with $200 million for the Open Land Trust program, and in 2007 passed a resolution to include open space funding in any future capital budget.  The last of the 1999 funds were spent in FY 2003.

The capital budget announced by the Governor in February 2008, does not propose funding for land acquisition.
