Global warming heats up local activism
Release Date: Friday, October 03, 2008
Details:
The Sierra Club Kaskaskia Group, American Bottom Conservancy, Illinois Environmental Council and Environment Illinois recently cosponsored a town hall meeting on Global Warming in Belleville.
The event drew about 25 participants and highlighted measures that individuals and local groups can take towards curbing global warming. Speakers included our very own Conservation Chair Kathy Andria and Amy Funk, a new member of the ExCom. The main speaker of the event was AJ Beck, an energy efficiency and renewable energy installer and founder of the Illinois Renewable Energy Association and Southern Illinois Center for a Sustainable Future.
Several people voiced interest in having a follow-up meeting that would evaluate how best to implement some of the strategies discussed locally. An independent group of people are facilitating a meeting inspired by the above event. It is exciting to know that such events can serve as a catalyst to future interest and action. These meetings are open to anyone interested in climate change issues. The meetings are the first Wednesday of each month at the Belleville Public Library.
