Organizing Crews Seek Volunteers for International Coastal Clean-up Day
Chicago
Group’s annual September 25 Beach Sweep is a wonderful event that this year will
likely attract more than 350 people who will clean up Montrose Beach as part of
International Coastal Clean-Up Day or work on habitat restoration.
The event will this year start with breakfast at 9:00 a.m.
(thanks to a donation from Whole Foods in Lincoln Park!) and a quick overview of
Sierra Club’s work on BP nationally and in the Chicago area. Congressman Mike
Quigley will be on hand to explain why he’s introduced a bill in Congress that
would make BP responsible for the full cost of the clean-up of the oil spill in
the Gulf of Mexico.
The beach Sweep and habitat restoration work in Montrose
Dunes and up in the bird sanctuary will go on from 9:45 a.m. We will wrap up the
event at 12:00 p.m. and then clean up.
That’s where you come in. We need volunteers behind the
scenes. This is a fun, feel-good event, but it takes a village to pull it off!
Huge thanks, gigantic recognition, breakfast and/or lunch (depending when you
start and how long you stay), a clean beach and a restored natural area, as well
as a t-shirt are your rewards.

Our "organizing" volunteer needs
include:
• Set-up Crew - 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. Unloading, setting
up tents, tables, food, supplies, registration desk. Coffee and breakfast
provided. Ideal number of volunteers - 20
• Registration Crew - 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Register
school and corporate groups; family and friends groups; individuals. Ideal
number of volunteers - 10
• Training Crew - 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. We have to give
short training sessions (under five minutes) to every group and individual. We
have to explain what the beach sweep or habitat restoration work involves; show
them how to fill out the data collection forms; orient them to the area
(bathrooms, food, water, info tents, where to pick up trash or work on plants);
give them supplies; show them where to return filled trash bags, tools, gloves,
data cards. We will have the trainers specialize in schools, corporates,
families or individuals. Ideal number of volunteers - 20
• Food Crew - 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Kids and teens
eat and drink a LOT, so we need adult supervision to make sure everyone gets
some snacks and stays hydrated. Ideal number of volunteers - 5
• Weigh Station and Data Card Collection Crew - 9:30
a.m. - 12:00 p.m. We need a crew to weigh each bag and to show volunteers
where to drop off their bags and to collect their data cards. Ideal number of
volunteers - 8
• Break Down Crew - 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. We need to
drop the tents, repack the supplies, clean up after the clean-up, and load the
rental van. Lunch will be provided and probably, beer, for those older than 21.
If you are willing to be an organizing crew member, please
contact Cory Jones
(cory.jones@illinois.sierraclub.org) or Christine Williamson
(birdchris@aol.com) and let us know what
you’re interested in doing.
There will be a pre-event training for event organizer
volunteers. Date TBA.
Thanks, Chris and Cory
