The Chicago Group challenges all of its members to make simple changes in their every day lives in 2008. They'll be lots of opportunity to learn more about the environment and more importantly, to do more to improve it. Learn about ways you can participate in YLR and the rewards that can be earned.

APR.5 (Sat) 9:00 am - Recycling Mega Drop-off Day!!
Plus Tour of Chicago Household Waste Recycling Facility
1150 N. North Branch St. on Goose Island
If all 9,000 (or even just half) of Chicago Group members gather up all hazardous household wastes, computers and cell phones in their homes for recycling, we’ll help the year-old Chicago Household Chemical and Computer Recycling Center SHATTER its previous one-day waste stream record. (Sat) Earth Day: Montrose Beach Sweep and Dunes Restoration

Chicago Group has adopted Montrose Beach and we truly love taking care of this natural oasis in our crowded city. Banish cabin fever! Celebrate Earth Day outdoors, cleaning up the beach and working on native habit restoration. April 19 is a great time to see migrant birds and new young plants. Refreshments will be served.

Endangered Species Day: Sierra Club Among Many Co-Sponsors
Chicago Group Plans Biodiversity Blitz, Global Warming Lecture
May 16 is the third annual U.S. Endangered Species Day. and Sierra Club is celebrating the diversity of Chicago’s amazing wildlife on May 17. We’ll start with a biodiversity bltiz through Lincoln Park (by bike to be carbon neutral!), followed by a lecture about the impacts of climate change on wildlife and a tour of Lincoln Park Zoo’s endangered species exhibits.

Chicago Green Festival: Volunteers Needed

More than 60,000 people are expected to attend this year’s Green Fest and it’s the perfect venue to attract new Sierra Club members and activists. Volunteer for three (hour (or longer) shifts from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on May 17 and from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on May 18.

Lincoln Park Land Grab: Protest Letters Needed ASAP to Mayor Daley
As part of a deal cloaked in secrecy, the Chicago Park District sold the exclusive rights to a four-acre chunk of the south end of Lincoln Park to the Latin School of Chicago.
    
There’s no other word to use regarding this deal except “sold.” The Chicago Park District Board approved a contract with minimal public notice that gives the school the right to build a $900,000 artificial turf soccer stadium at the very south end of Lincoln Park.

JUN.7-13 Start Planning Now for June Bike to Work Week – Join Team Sierra Green
Reduce your carbon commuting footprint to almost zero by biking to work, school, social events and for around-town chores. Chicago Group is participating for the second year in a row in the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation’s Bike to Work Week Challenge in the second week of June. The object is to get as many of our members as possible to bike to work from
June 7-13.

 
AUG.20 Cubs Fundraiser: It’s NEVER Too Early to Plan for Summer Baseball
5:00 p.m. Party and 7:05 p.m. Game Time
Chicago Group will repeat last year’s sold out Cubs fundraiser. This year, we expect the Cubs to spank the Cincinnati Reds (now managed by ex-Cubbie manager Dusty Baker). We’re starting the evening with a pre-game party at a member’s house near the ball park and then it’s off to the ball park. Read More ...

Sierrans Outdoors & New Member Party - FINAL CALL!
Don't miss our annual afternoon Chicago Group Outings and New Member Party to socialize with fellow active and wannabe participants of outings past and to come. We will again celebrate at the Little House "cabin in the woods" which includes a warming fireplace. The event begins at 1:00 pm with an optional short walk. A brief What-We-Do and How-To-Get-Involved presentation will be given around 3:00. This gathering a great opportunity to learn more about the club, meet leaders and fellow outdoor enthusiasts, and learn about outings as fun and educational experiences that support Sierra Club's motto: "Explore, Enjoy and Protect." Participants are asked to bring a favorite dish of their choosing to this potluck tradition.

APR.13  Day Hike #1 Along the Des Plaines River Trail, Des Plaines, IL
Join us for the first of three hikes along the Des Plaines River Trail. Hike #1 will begin at Campground Woods in Des Plaines and cover 12 miles along the middle section of the trail, going through some nicely wooded sections as well as a few prairie sections.
 
MAY.4  Day Hike #2 Along the Des Plaines River Trail, Des Plaines, IL
Join us for Hike #2 along the Des Plaines River Trail. We will begin at the southern end of the trail in River Forest and cover 8-10 miles. This section should be alive with spring wildflowers as we traverse by some historic Indian sites.

DesPlaines River Clean-up, Chicagoland, IL
May is National River Clean-up week. Spend some time with fellow Siera Club members cleaning up a section of the DesPlaines River. The DesPlaines river has improved and is cleaner than in past years, but we need to keep working on it.
 
MAY.17 Beginner Canoe Clinic at Busse Woods, Elk Grove Village
Have you ever wanted to learn how to paddle a canoe? Want to prepare for summer-time fun? Then join us for an afternoon of instruction and paddling practice on Busse Lake! Time: 12:30 to 6:00 p.m. Weather permitting, we will have a potluck barbeque afterwards!

ALL VILLAGE OFFICIALS AND RESIDENTS WELCOME!
 
The League of Women Voters of the La Grange Area (LWVLGA) is hosting a Cool Villages Day, featuring speakers from Environment Illinois, Sierra Club, the Center for Neighborhood Technology, and ICLEI, Local Governments for Sustainability. At the event village officials and residents will understand the extent of carbon emissions in our state as a whole; and they will learn clear, cost-effective strategies for lowering emissions. Finally, both village officials and residents will be given an opportunity to commit to a plan for lowering emissions in our west suburban communities. Representatives of organizations committed to climate change will guide participants in understanding the agreements and how best to implement them.
