Explore, enjoy and protect the planet!

John Muir,
Founder

Who we are . . .
Since founded by John Muir in 1892 , the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself. It is the largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. Most of all, the Sierra Club is about people and engaging them locally to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet.
Sierra Club is divided into chapters and groups, most chapters representing a state and any number of geographic groups within a state. The Illinois Chapter is divided into 15 groups, totaling 20,000+ members. The Chicago Group is the largest with about 7,000+ members and includes not only Chicago, but also surrounding towns and northerm suburbs. Though a member is assigned to a group based on their residential address, members may partake in events in any group within the Chapter or an other Chapter of the Sierra Club.

Non-members are always welcome to Sierra Club events. By participating, we hope supporting our events and initiatives will encourage a participant to become a member. Not a member?

How to get involved . . .
Our events usually have a focus related to activism, outings and/or social interaction.

Become an Activist by joining a committee, such as Air & Energy or Political Action, or the Water Team -- to champion an area of local concerns. Or, help with special events, such as political campaigns of candidates endorsed by the Club. These often involve phone bank calling or canvassing neighborhoods or assisting at various candidate headquarters throughout the city and suburbs. Also, consider volunteering for annual events, such as our Montrose Beach cleanups for Earth Day and the fall International Coastal Cleanup, as well as monthly sweeps. In addition. volunteer for Chicago Green Festival, the largest regional sustainability event -- a great opportunity to promote Sierra to visitors of our booth.
Get Outdoors by participating in various outings activities, such as hiking, biking, canoeing, backpacking and cross-country skiing. A complete list of all group outings are always available from our Calendar of IL Outings. Contact the listed leader of the outing to RSVP and to determine if your skills and fitness level is appropriate for the activity. Popular outings fill up fast, so sign-up as soon as possible to reserve a place.
Socialize by attending events primarily intended for social interaction, such as our ethnic dinner and walks. However, all Club events have a social element by meeting and interacting with other eco-minded people. To be kept informed of upcoming socials, subscribe to our Social Email List.

Volunteer by checking out all our volunteer opportunities on our Volunteer page. We need your help!

So whether a member or not, please join us in one of the ways described here.
Subscribe to e-News to be kept informed of events from which to participate.
