Natural Areas Stewardship Across the entire Calumet region, volunteers are actively working to restore land back to ecological health. Be you a student or a retiree, there's need of your help.

Where: Beaubien Woods Forest Preserve [Take the Bishop Ford (94) south to the "Beaubien Woods" Exit (#69), just south of the 130th Street exit; Chicago, IL – Follow the signs to meet at the picnic pavilion on Flatfoot Lake.]
Why: Join others to learn about nature and help restore a beautiful prairie! Interest is growing in this incredible Cook County forest preserve, and now is the time to get involved! People of all ages and abilities are invited to join others in removing invasive species at this important prairie remnant. We'll also enjoy a nature walk, learn about local ecosystems and identifying plants, hear stories from the Underground Railroad and warm our hands around a bonfire. Event occurs rain or sign. Dress to work outdoors.

Permanent Landfill Ban
The Southeast side of the City of Chicago is home to the last operating landfill within City limits. Waste Management Inc.'s CID landfill is located at a bend in the Calumet River at 135th Street and is readily visible from I-55. In January 2004 it stopped accepting municipal waste but it continues to accept construction and demolition waste. Waste Management officials have long been pressuring the Chicago City Council to allow them to expand CID but thanks of a landfill expansion moratorium, they have been unsucessful.
Supporters of a permanent landfill ban won a major victory in mid-December 2004 when the Chicago City Council voted to extend the moratorium an additional 2-years. It would have expired in February 2005.
SE side residents and the SE Env. Task Force have long been working to enact a permanent landfill ban. Local Alderman John Pope (Ward 10) has been supportive but Sierra Club, with members across Chicago, can play an important role. |
