Blooms: mid May - mid September
Different species of Water Lilies inhabit much of the United States, but the most common is Nuphar advena, or the Yellow Water Lily, also known as Spatterdock, Yellow Cow Lily, or Yellow Pond Lily. Yellow Water Lilies grow in ponds or lakes with slow moving water and produce leaves of around 6-12 inches long and yellow, bowl-shaped flowers. Although some consider the Yellow Water Lily to be a nuisance because it can take over ponds and push out other species, it is also a useful part of many wetland communities as it provides habitat for aquatic animals.
