Turtlehead

Chelone glabra

Blooms: late August - late September

The Turtlehead is a perennial plant that is found most commonly in the central part of Illinois, mostly in floodplain or wetland areas. The plant is usually 2-3 feet tall with an un-branched stem leading into an interesting flower head resembling a turtle in the bud stage, hence the name. When opened, the buds are white or pink, depending on the species type, and have little scent. The leaves of the Turtlehead are serrated and hairless.
