Shaggy Mane Mushooms

Season: May - early June; September - October

The Shaggy Mane Mushroom is found from wooded areas to city lawns. It is a hardy, edible mushroom that can be easily distinguished from others during its early stages by its large, shaggy, white cap. As it ages, the cap opens from the bottom and slowly decays into a black, inky liquid. The stalk remains after the cap has dissolved, usually at a height of 4 to 6 inches.
