Endorsement Matters

It's hard to get good information about the candidates that will appear on your ballot. News stories and debates focus on conflict and controversy, with superficial discussions that often ignore the facts. Party endorsements are, well, partisan, and too often put winning ahead of serving. Union and industry picks will sometimes sacrifice our future for jobs or profits at any price.

A Sierra Club endorsement is different. It identifies a candidate that will work for clean air, clean water, and sustainable economic growth that creates green jobs. We know that the river to sustainable economic recovery runs through a clean environment, and we're doing what you don't have time to do yourself.

The W&W Political Committee consists of twelve members with diverse backgrounds from across Lake County, bringing more than 150 years of collective environmental leadership. It follows the Club's rigorous and in-depth process to identify and support viable candidates who favor strong environmental protection. The process includes:

  • Detailed multi-topic questionnaires
  • In-depth review of voting records
  • Review and monitoring of candidates' campaigns
  • Candidate interviews
  • Relationship building with candidates
  • Review of district political demographics
  • Review of candidate fundraising ability
  • Approval by two separately elected Sierra Club committees

Redistricting has made endorsements this year more difficult, creating new districts with fresh but untried candidates, and pitting incumbent against incumbent. Find out whether you are voting in a different district this election than you were last election, and who will be on your ballot in Lake County at  https://countyclerk.lakecountyil.gov/ElectionInfo/Voter-Services/Pages/Voter-Power.aspx This site presently says it is to confirm your registration to vote, but it also is the primary source for what will be on your ballot.

We won't drone on about each of those important bullet points above, or all the hours it takes, or the wonderful (and strange!) things that candidates told us. We just hope that you will re-read the points, and then find our endorsed candidates on your ballot and support them.
