The BLUESTEM NETWORK of the Sierra Club's River Prairie Group (DuPage County, Illinois) WANTS YOU!!

Do you want an easy, quick way to make your voice heard on environmental issues? Join the BLUESTEM NETWORK of the Sierra Club's River Prairie Group. When an important environmental issue arises in the federal or state legislatures, action alerts notifying members of the issue will be passed down the Bluestem Network. Often this will just be a brief message left on your answering machine. You would pass on the action alert to few individuals on the group's phone tree below you and leave your legislator a brief message. Calls to state and federal legislators are taken by receptionists who record the calls and tally the responses. Non-Sierra Club members and non-residents of DuPage County are also invited to join the Bluestem Network.

The Bluestem Network is expected to be activated 6-12 times a year. Members will receive a short phone call directing them to check their email or access the RPG webpage Action Alert tab for a detailed message explaining the alert. Members would also pass on the action alert to a few other members on the group's phone tree with a quick phone call. Members can also chose to just receive the email.

The Bluestem Network also provides members with a choice for receiving letter writing information on issues and group news over e-mail. When you sign up for the Bluestem Network you will receive additional information explaining these optional features and given the opportunity, at that time, to receive these optional features.

The name "Bluestem" comes from the prairie plant, Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman), which grew in DuPage County, as well as, many areas of the Midwestern prairies before the indigenous prairies were destroyed through development. Big Bluestem still can be found in remnant prairies in DuPage County (the Morton Arboretum's for one example). It is a native, warm-season perennial tall grass. It begins growth in late April and flowers in late summer, attaining heights up to 8 feet or sometimes more, including flower stalks.
