Preliminary Water Use and Wastewater Discharge

from Proposed Champaign Ethanol Facility - The Andersons, Inc.

• Proposed Ethanol facility, Champaign, IL: 110 million gallons/year capacity
• Water supply proposed from on-site non-potable production wells
• In-plant water use:
  • Cooling tower makeup (cooling tower used for dissipation of heat load)
  • Boiler feed water (boiler to generate steam for process process heating & drying)
  • Process use (preparation of corn mash)
• Sources of wastewater discharge: (continuous)
  • Backwash from filters (filters used to remove iron precipitated from raw water)
  • Reverse osmosis concentrate (RO used to remove dissolved minerals from raw water supply)
  • Cooling tower blowdown (to prevent excessive scaling in the tower)
  • Softener regeneration discharge (softener used to remove hardness from raw water)

  NOTE: No wastewater will be generated from the corn/ethanol processing. More than half of water consumption will be lost by evaporation.

• Wastewater characteristics
  • Estimated discharge flow rate: 500 gallons/minute (720000 gals/day)
  • No organic or oxygen-demanding pollutants in the wastewater -- essentially all inorganic substances
  • Contaminants in wastewater will be essentially the dissolved minerals present in the raw water -- concentrated by evaporation in the cooling tower and by the RO membrane
  • Discharge concentration of all pollutants will be less than applicable Illinois water quality standards. Estimated concentration of several pollutants as follows:

    Total dissolved solids	850 mg/l
    Iron	3.2 mg/l
    Arsenic	< 0.23 mg/l [*]
    Nitrate (NO3)	< 2.3 mg/l [*]
    Nitrite (NO2)	< 1.1 mg/l [*]

    [*] NOTE: Arsenic, nitrate and nitrite are present in raw water at less than analytical quantification level

• Proposed wastewater discharge
  • Discharge into existing local drainage tile system -- Fountain Head Drainage District
  • Drain tile discharges into Kaskaskia Ditch (approximately 1.2 mi west of plant site) Kaskaskia Ditch is tributary to Kaskaskia River
  • Discharge will be authorized by and must comply with all conditions of an NPDES Permit (which must be approved and issued by Illinois EPA)
