Biodiversity Blitz at Allerton Park
How diverse is Allerton Park?  Illinois Natural History Survey scientists will be finding out during the Midwest's first Biodiversity Blitz.  Scientists will be identifying as many species (birds, mammals, plants, fungi, lichens, insects, other invertebrates, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and microbes) as possible from 2pm Friday, June 29th to 2pm, Saturday the 30th.  Come see how biologists gather biodiversity data--from fish and bat surveying to black-lighting for insects.  There are varying degrees of participation.  Visit the Biodiversity Blitz website for more information, to sign up for specific observation activities, or to offer expertise.

Mega-dairy update
As of mid-May, the Illinois Dept. of Agriculture has been waiting for months for more information from the developer of a 3000+ head dairy planned for Bellflower (NW of Mahomet), to decide whether to issue a permit for
construction to begin.  If built, there will be over twice as many animals at the Bellflower mega-dairy as the current largest Illinois dairy, in Elmwood, which this Winter dumped over 2 million gallons of waste from an overloaded lagoon, and was sued by the Illinois Attorney General and by lenders.  For more info: (217) 897-6171, Quad County Clean Air and Water Coalition, QuadCountyCoalition@Yahoo.com; and Families Against Rural Messes http://www.farmweb.org/.

Membership Committee

People involved with membership keep records of who attends meetings, ensure availability of membership brochures at meetings and other functions, poll members about their interests, serve as 'hospitality chair' and greeter at meetings, and provide assistance for efforts to recruit new members and activists.  These activities can be handled by a single (busy) person, or they can be assigned to several different people in a Membership Committee.

For more information about joining the Prairie Group of the Sierra Club, contact Jim Beauchamp, 217-344-3307.
