Did you know that your National Forests are logged by the Forest Service and that billions of your tax dollars are lost cutting down your National Forests? On June 4, 1897, the first logging rider opened up our National Forests to logging. This web site is dedicated to stopping logging on public lands. The Sierra Club supports protecting all federal publicly-owned lands in the United States by advocating an end to all commercial logging on these lands.

A Free Market Analysis of How Americans Will Benefit Economically by Stopping the Logging of National Forests

On January 21, 1997, the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit issued a landmark decision: Sierra Club vs. Jack Ward Thomas. The Court of Appeals ruled that "the Forest Service has a history of preferring timber production to other uses. Rather than being a neutral process which determines how the national forests can best meet the needs of the American people, forest planning, as practiced by the Forest Service, is a political process replete with opportunities for the intrusion of bias and abuse. . . . Consequently, decisions may be made, not because they are in the best interest of the American people but because they benefit the Forest Service's fiscal interest." The Forest Service asked the 6th Circuit to reconsider, but the Court denied the request.

What is the Sierra Club doing?

Did you know that scientists estimate that Forest Service timber sales kill 250 millions birds a year? Most of the dead birds are nestlings and many suffer agonizing deaths form starvation, exposure, or dehydration.
