The High Speed Rail Reinvestment Act (ELPC)
According to the Environmental Law and Policy Center, the High Speed Rail Reinvestment Act (S.250/HR. 2329) now has 57 sponsors in the U.S. Senate, including Senate Majority Leader Thomas Daschle and Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott. Similar legislation in the House of Representatives has 178 sponsors.
The measure allows Amtrak to raise $12 billion in capital funding for high-speed rail projects nationwide - a figure that would translate to $2-3 billion for the Midwest and would provide enough money to complete high-speed rail corridors from Chicago to St. Louis, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Cincinnati major cities of Detroit, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Indianapolis and St. Louis, as well as medium-sized cities in-between, such as Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, Bloomington, Springfield, and Madison.
