Northwest Cook County Group

The Northwest Cook County Group (NWCCG) is a local group of the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club. The Sierra Club is America’s oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization. Founded in 1892 by John Muir and other supporters, the Sierra Club’s goal is to explore, enjoy and protect the planet.

The Northwest Cook County Group sponsors many activities, ranging from monthly program meetings, conservation workdays, letter writing parties, fund raising events and recreational trips. The group’s activities are open to members and non-members. Our group services the northwest portions of Cook County but our events and membership are open to all. The group is managed by volunteers who meet once a month to plan club events and take care of the day-to-day business.

Our program meetings take place on the second Thursday of each month (except for July and August) at Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary at 1111 East Schaumburg Road (on Schaumburg Road, just west of Meacham Road) in Schaumburg (Yahoo Map). Meetings start at 7:00 p.m. with refreshments and snacks and at 7:30 p.m. we have a guest speaker or special program. Programs focus on natural history or environmental issues. Program meetings are free and open to members and non-members.

One of the ways the Northwest Cook County Group preserves our environment is by sponsoring conservation workdays. The group sponsors several workdays a year to help restore native ecosystems. Participants help by cutting Buckthorn, an invasive shrub which crowds out native plants, or planting native wildflowers.

Letter writing parties are a great way for us to get together and have fun and also write to our legislators about current environmental issues. Writing letters to our legislators is a very effective way to let them know how their constituents feel about our environment. Letter writing parties take place every other month at the home of a NWCCG member.

The Sierra Club sponsors many recreational outings that are open to members and non-members. The trips range from backpacking, day hikes, caving, canoeing, bike riding to cross-country skiing. Whatever your interest, there’s an outing for you to enjoy.

The Northwest Cook County Group publishes a quarterly newsletter, the leaf is available on the backside of the Illinois Chapter's newsletter, Lake and Prairie. The newsletter helps keep our members up-to-date on current environmental issues, has interesting natural history articles and inform readers about club programs and events.

We invite you to attend a program meeting, come to a conservation workday or spend the day with us on an outing. Join us as we explore, enjoy and protect the planet.
