Conservation Activities

Concern about our environment and a desire to preserve and protect natural areas are the common bond between Sierra Club members.

The Sierra Club's Mission Statement is to:

  1. Explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth.
  2. Practice and promote the responsible use of the earth ecosystems and resources.
  3. Educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment.
  4. Use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

In this endeavor the Northwest Cook County Group (NWCCG) tries to persuade our federal, state and local politicans to support environmental and preservation issues. Our members write letters to politicans, visit our state capitol in Springfield and even travel to Washington, D.C. to voice our concern about environmental issues. We endorse local political candidates who also share our concern about the environment and wish to preserve our natural areas. To help these candidates get elected we publish information about the candidates in our newsletters and on our website and make announcements at our program meetings. NWCCG members have assisted political candidates by handing out literature door-to-door, at train stations, at shopping malls and also by manning phone banks. Click here for more information on political endorsements.

Another way the Northwest Cook County Group preserves our environment is by sponsoring conservation workdays. The group sponsors several workdays a year to help restore native ecosystems. Participants help by cutting Buckthorn, an invasive shrub which crowds out native plants, or planting native wildflowers. Please visit our events page for information on upcoming workdays.

The NWCCG also has letter writing parties every other month at the home of a club member. Letter writing parties are a great way for us to get together and have fun and also write to our legislators about current environmental issues. Writing letters to our legislators is a very effective way to let them know how their constituents feel about our environment. Please visit our events page for information on upcoming letter writing parties.

The national and state Sierra Club websites are a great resource for getting information about current environmental issues. Both the Illinois and national Sierra Club websites have a “Take Action” section which provides information about current environmental issues and a sample letter for you to use to voice your opinion to your elected officials. The entire process can be done on-line in a matter of minutes. Please use the links below to visit the “Take Action” pages of the Illinois and national Sierra Club websites.
