Bi-Annual Workday at Spring Valley Nature Center
This year, on May 21st several NWCC Group Sierra Club members showed up for our bi-annual workday at Spring Valley Nature Center. Our mission on this beautiful spring day was helping a scout, name Andrew, clear Sarah’s Grove (part of Schaumburg Natural Area) of European Buckthorn and plant native trees and bushes. This is Andrew’s project on his journey to become an Eagle Scout. Good Luck, Andrew. Sarah’s Grove looks much better thanks to your efforts.
"Sarah's Grove is the area that I chose to work on for my Eagle Project because I like to work in the outdoors. When I was looking for a project, I went to Spring Valley and talked to Mr. Brooks. He found me a 3/4 acre area that I would need to clear out all the brush and invasive species. This took two days with volunteers from boy scout troop 196 and volunteers from Spring Valley. To finish my project, we replanted native plants and trees. This took a much shorter amount of time, only half a day. I really enjoyed learning how to keep the invasive species from attacking the plants and trees native to our area."
