The ethnic dining series now leaves Asia and visits Africa for the

embroidered tablecloths give it away. And then there’s the food, exotic choices
such as doro tibs alicha and spices such as berbere from red chili. Vegetarians
have a variety of vegan choices. I personally can’t wait to taste the honey
wine. Come experience this exotic adventure with your fellow Sierrans.

the advertisements for films from Bollywood, and hear some of the 14 official
languages of India. Come join your fellow environmentalists for a wonderful
evening of good food and conversation. Dinner reservations are at 6:30 pm. Limit
is 30 participants.
June 13

Island Brewery
1800 N. Clybourn Ave., Chicago, IL
Come join us for dinner and drinks and visit the Goose Island
Brewery, one of the original brewpubs. Goose Island is known for its high
quality beers and has been named one of the top ten breweries in the world
according to Beverage Testing Institute. Not only is the beer great, but the
food is also excellent. Choose from a salad or vegetarian roasted vegetables to
fish or steak dishes. Best of all, Goose Island is part of the movement towards
environmentally sound brewing. Dinner reservations are at 6:30 p.m.
April 12 -
Uncommon Ground Coffee House and Cafe

We're already expecting a big crowd for the Sierra Social
get-together at Uncommon Ground Café, 3800 N. Clark St. Don't be the only one to
miss out on all the fun! There is something for everyone including
vegetarian dishes. Try the homemade vegetarian chili or the brown sugar &
bourbon glazed White Marble Farms pork chop. Experience a wide variety of
familiar and unusual dishes. The café is entirely smoke-free. Limit 20 participants.
For those of you who could not attend the Annual Outings Group and New Member Party
really missed out on the fun. We had over 50 people in attendance!
The potluck food was great. I personally pigged out on the desserts.

October 27 - Thursday, 6:30 pm
The
Heartland Cafe
-
7000 N. Glenwood
For the month of October, popular demand dictates that we return to the
Heartland Cafe in Roger's Park for our monthly social. We had a good
turnout at Handlebar last month so let's see if we can get the same folks and
some new friends to join us this month.
September 28 - Wednesday, 6:30
pm
The Handlebar Grill
-
2311 W. North
This favorite for socials, this Wicker Park
restaurant has great
food, mostly vegetarian and serves up
an international flavor bar food in an offbeat bicycle-themed atmosphere. The space
that was once La Cumbamba sports, containing colorful mosaic tiles and furniture made from
recycled bicycle parts: bar stools are reclaimed rubber tires. Less robust
eaters can try the saganaki-inspired Hermes pie (filled with spinach, Feta
cheese and eggplant) and samosas. Diners with larger appetites can opt for the
blackened catfish, barbecued seitan (wheat meat) sandwich or one of the daily
specials. Eclectic desserts include banana-bourbon bread pudding and lemon
sorbet (creamy lemon-champagne sorbet served in a champagne flute).
August 25 - Thursday, 6:30 pm
Bin 36 -
339 N. Dearborn
On Thursday, 25 August, we'll meet at Bin 36 at six thirty. Instead
of having a full dinner, which was nice last time but a bit pricey, we'll try
their cheese tastings. The restaurant has around 50 cheeses, from which they
assemble tastings of five or six. They also assemble tastings of five or six
wines, which are paired with the cheeses. The restaurant is located at 339 N.
Dearborn in Chicago.
July 26 - Tuesday, 7:00 pm
The Beat Kitchen
-
2100 W. Belmont
On Tuesday, 26 July, instead of our usual bar and restaurant haunts,
we're going to try something different. We'll meet at seven o'clock at The Beat
Kitchen. The address is 2100 W. Belmont in Chicago. Wendy Morgan, one of our
fellow members, has invited us to this club to hear some musical performances.
There will be four vocalists and a house band. Arrangements have been made for
Sierra Club members to pay a discounted entry fee of $5 per person.
June 28 - Tuesday,
6:30 pm
Uncommon Ground
The June Sierra Social will be held on Tuesday, 28 June 2005 at 6:30
PM. We'll meet at Uncommon Ground, 3800 N. Clark in Chicago. This location has
served us well in the past with good beer, wine and food. I've also just learned
that the entire place is now smoke-free. See you there.
May 19 - Thursday,
6:30 pm
Parthenon in Greektown
Since I can remember neither the last time we met "out west" or at a Greek
restaurant, the May Sierra Social will be held at the Parthenon in Greektown.
The restaurant is at 314 S. Halsted, near the CTA Blue line Halsted stop. The
table will be set at six thirty.
April 20 - Wednesday, 6:30 pm
Hackney's Printer Row, 733 S. Dearborn, Chicago.
We'll be meeting at Hackney's restaurant. It will be a small change in type
of venue for us but I hope it will be a welcome change. The restaurant is
smoke-free, has several vegetarian items and is close to the Red Line Harrison
station. It's also close to the Brown and Blue lines.
March 22 - Tuesday, 7:00 pm
Andie's, 1467 W. Montrose, Chicago.
Continuing the trend of combining the Social with some other Sierra Club
activity, the March Sierra Social will include a presentation by Jennifer
Hensley titled "Mercury: it's for dinner".
Andie's restaurant is at 1467 W. Montrose, four blocks from the CTA Brown line
Montrose station. It has a middle eastern theme, with a full bar and restaurant.
There is a good variety for all of our diets. We will be meeting in the separate
dining area on the lower level, which is smoke-free.
February 24 - Thursday, 7:00 pm
Red Lion Pub,
2446 N. Lincoln, Chicago.
The February social gathering will be held at the Red Lion Pub on 24
February. It's located at 2446 N. Lincoln, near the CTA Red. Purple and Brown
lines. The social will begin at seven o'clock.
This social is organized to coincide with the Sierra Club
Transportation and
Sprawl Committee meeting, also held at the Red Lion, but beginning at six
o'clock. If you are interested in participating in the Trans-Sprawl meeting, or
would like to simply listen in, please feel free to join it and then move to the
social gathering afterward.
The Red Lion Pub is a cozy English style pub. It has a full bar, with an
extensive selection of single malt scotch and microbrews. It also has
traditional pub food, like fish and chips, shepherd's pie and the eternal
favorite - bangers and mash.
January 27 - Thursday, 6:00 pm
The Map Room, 1949 N. Hoyne, Chicago.
It's been about a year since we met at this location and the interior has been
recently remodeled. The Map Room prides itself on its wide selection of beer.
The theme, as you may have guessed from the name, is international travel, and
the variety of beer matches it.

Chicago Group of the Sierra Club Note! There is a 50 person maximum with a registration deadline of Thursday, December 9 or until limit reached. Interested? Complete and send in the Registration Form along with your $$$ ASAP. |
November 18 - Thursday, 6:30 pm
Uncommon Ground Coffeehouse, 1214 W. Grace, 773/929-3680.
Holy cow, it's been a rough week for the environment! Even if you're living
under a rock and didn't hear about the couple fairly bleak global warming
reports that have come out, we all know that the environmental anti-Christ has
just, by hook or crook, been elected (for the first time) president. Or so the
numbers say.... On the bright side, at least Ashcroft just resigned!
Anyhow, I know a WHOLE LOT of bummed out people in the Sierra Club and related
organizations, and I bet Club members would like to come together for some
social interaction, rabble-rousing, and possibly drinking your cares away (not
that I'm recommending that...)
So come on up to Uncommon Ground (http://www.uncommonground.com/) for great food
for both vegetarians and meat-eaters, cheap martinis, and live acoustic music
next Thursday at 6:30 PM!!
Please RSVP to Eric_P_Lorenz@rsh.net or call 312/563-4182.
September 23 - Thursday, 6:00 pm at the
Twisted Spoke
Meet at Twisted Spoke, 501 N Ogden St., Chicago, (312) 666-1500. "Eat, Drink,
Ride" is the motto at this casual Ogden Avenue joint, but most people are just
eating and drinking. The place is decorated to look like a biker hangout, with
several hogs buried nose down in the dirt outside, a grimly industrial metal
interior, and a rust-covered facade. The menu offers bar munchies, burgers, and
a dozen or so huge sandwiches -- barbecued chicken, pork butt, as well as a
grilled portobello & even a felafel sandwich for vegetarian folks -- all of
which are served with equally huge handfuls of crispy fries. A fine joint for
folks on bikes with or without motors! Please RSVP to
Eric_P_Lorenz@rsh.net
or call 312-563-4182.
August 19 - Thursday, 6:00 pm
at Uncommon Ground
Meet at Uncommon Ground, 1214 W. Grace St., 773/929-3680. Finally, a chance to
take advantage of their outdoor seating! Our previous visits have all been in
the winter, but their patio always looked beckoning. Great coffee, hot
chocolate, and food! The menu includes many organic and vegetarian selections,
including pizzas, good sandwiches, homemade soups and pastries baked daily.
Live music likely and $4.00 martinis on Thursdays!
Please RSVP
to Jami Bennett
scifibennie@hotmail.com or call
847/864-1826.
July 22 - Thursday, 6:00 pm
at Leadway Bar & Gallery
Meet at Leadway Bar & Gallery, 5233 N. Damen Ave., Chicago, 773-728-2663.
Ravenswood's one-of-a-kind bar, gallery and performance space caters to
neighborhood types with an artistic bent. The bar keeps several easels on hand,
along with butcher paper, tempera paints and paintbrushes for budding Seurats
who want to work on their "pint-ilism." Their creations cover the walls.
Nightly drink specials include $3 Guinness and Harp pints, $3 Honkers Ale
pints, and $2 Old Style bottles. A menu of familiar bar fare (burgers, chicken
sandwiches, quesadillas, etc, as well as salads) is offered until midnight
daily. Please RSVP to
Eric_P_Lorenz@rsh.net
or call 312-563-4182.
June 17 - Thursday, 7:00 pm at
Fado Irish Pub
Meet at Fado, 100 W. Grand Ave. 312-836-0066. Fado in Gaelic means "long
ago," and indeed this multi-level bar has captured the feel of Irish pubs
drenched as much in tradition as in Harp and Tullamore Dew. This River North pub
features hearty authentic pub-grub and builds a tremendous 20-ounce pint of
Guinness stout. We made it a little later so you have plenty of time to park
your bike!!
Please RSVP
to
Eric_P_Lorenz@rsh.net
or
call 312-563-4182.
May 20 - Thursday, 6:00 pm at
Goose Island Brewery
(location change).
Meet at Goose Island, 1800 North Clybourn, Chicago, (312) 915-0071. This true
Chicago microbrewery offers a selection of fresh beers on tap and an extensive
menu of sandwiches, salads, and entrees that includes gourmet brats, a chicken
Caesar sandwich, and shepherd's pie as everyday options; daily specials can be a
bit more innovative. It’s a loud, upbeat atmosphere, with friendly, attentive
service. The food is good, it’s close to transit, and gosh if it isn’t getting
warm outside! See you there.
Please RSVP
to
Eric_P_Lorenz@rsh.net
or
call 312-563-4182.
April 22 - Thursday, 6:00 pm at
Cosi
Meet at Cosi, 55 E. Grand Ave. (312) 321-1990. How about spending part of
Earth Day with fellow Sierrans at a coffeehouse and veggie-friendly sandwich
shop in one? The menu features mix-and-match sandwiches made on hearth-baked
flatbread with a range of ingredients from ham and turkey to tandoori chicken,
grilled vegetables, and goat cheese. There are also several salads and daily
soups, as well as beer, wine, and cocktails. Come out and socialize with your
like-minded neighbors, just a few steps from the loop trains.
Please RSVP
to
Eric_P_Lorenz@rsh.net
or
call 312-563-4182.
March 25 - Thursday, 6:00 pm at
the
Andies Restaurant
Meet at Andies Restaurant, 1467 W. Montrose Ave., 773-348-0654. A favorite
of lots of local Chicago Sierrans, this restaurant offers Middle Eastern
favorites including lamb, chicken and fresh seafood pasta. However, the
vegetarian appetizers and entrees equal the number of offerings for meat eaters.
Please RSVP
to
Eric_P_Lorenz@rsh.net
or
call 312-563-4182.
February
26
- Thursday, 6:00 pm at
the
Handlebar Bar and
Grill
Meet at the Handlebar, 2311 W.
North Ave., 773-384-9546. This place deserves a second visit, too, for the great
food, and to patronize other alternative transportation activists in town! This
mostly vegetarian (no farm, no fowl) Wicker Park restaurant serves up
international flavor bar food in an offbeat bicycle-themed atmosphere. The space
that was once La Cumbamba sports colorful mosaic tiles and furniture made from
recycled bicycle parts: bar stools are reclaimed rubber tires. Less robust
eaters can try the saganaki-inspired Hermes pie (filled with spinach, Feta
cheese and eggplant) and samosas.
January 15 - Thursday, 6:00 pm at
Uncommon Ground
Meet at Uncommon Ground, 1214 W. Grace St.,
773-929-3680. Last year, we visited this cozy coffeehouse on what seemed like
the coldest night of the year. Based on the great turnout, we decided to make it
a cold-weather tradition for the Chicago Group’s Socials. Great coffee, hot
chocolate, and food! The menu includes many organic and vegetarian selections,
including pizza, sand -wiches, homemade soups and pastries baked daily. Live
music likely and $4 martinis on Thursdays!
------- SOCIALS OF 2003 ------------
November 20,
2003 -
Thursday,
7:00 pm
at
Reza’s.
Meet at Reza’s, 432 W. Ontario St. (312-664-4500). Persian cuisine is served in
a large space once occupied by Sieben's brewpub, later by a branch of The
Berghoff. The brew kettles, now dormant, still glisten behind the mahogany bar.
This branch of the original Reza's (in Andersonville) has an airy feel, thanks
to high ceilings and French doors that face Ontario St. In nice weather those
doors open onto a sidewalk cafe. Thirty-six wines are available by the glass,
39 by the bottle.
October 23, 2003 -
Thursday,
5:30 pm
at Bin 36.
Meet at Bin 36,
339 N. Dearborn St.(312-755-9463).
Looking
for a wine education (minus the snootiness) as well as great food? Bin 36, a
wine retail store, tavern and restaurant all rolled into one, promises to
demystify the process of selecting wine, and offers a wide selection of
appetizers and tasty pizzas. Patrons can choose from a list of 50 wines and
sample them by the glass while the staff demonstrates how to match wine with
food.
September 25, 2003 - Thursday, 5:00 pm at
the
Hopleaf
Meet at the Hopleaf, 5148 N. Clark St.
(in Andersonville). This bar's spectacular
selection of Belgian beers and local microbrews are its main draw, however,
their new kitchen (hopefully open by September!) promises to offer even more
allure: I'm told European dishes, organic and vegetarian foods (and also some
meat dishes) will all be featured. But let's be honest, this place is first and
foremost about the world's finest beers! Don't forget to bring cash, as they
don't take anything else (yet).

7:00 pm
at
Café Iberico. Chicago Group Annual Holiday Party Join us for good food and fun at the Chicago Group's annual holiday party at Café Iberico, 739 N LaSalle St. This funky downtown spot is known for great tapas and fresh sangria. This is a great time to meet other Sierrans, find out about club activities and events, and make plans for the year ahead. The cost will be $24.00 per person. This includes hot and cold tapas, served family-style (this means it comes to our table, you pass it around and share with your table-mates, and the wait staff brings more as needed), 1 drink each (sangria, house wine, beer, pop, or coffee, cash bar beyond first drink). Further menu details can be found online by viewing special package-II. We'll also have an update on the Club's activities, high points, low points, etc. over the past year, and prizes too!
