Sinful Five
Defunct
K-Mart shopping center and parking lot on North Main Street
Not only ugly, but also indicative of businesses abandoning the West Side
of town for more lucrative markets. Also, the fight between the "big
box stores" leaves gaping wounds, empty buildings, and vacant parking
lots over what one was the best farmland in the world.
Trask Bridge Road heading out of Rockford up to Winnebago Road
IL Department of Transportation road work has caused the destruction of front
yards and miles of beautiful trees, including burr oaks that were hundreds
of years old. There used to be greenery all the way out Rt. 70 and now it's
a wide open fields with trees marked with a bug orange "X" to indicate
they're to be the next victims of the bulldozer. "It's very sad."
Route 2 north of Rockford is next on the list.
Volcano
Falls Funpark
Volcano Falls Funpark is located next to I-90 north of Riverside Blvd. "What
was Loves Park thinking when it voted to allow such a tacky development go
in on prime real estate right at the highly visible entrance to the City off
of I-90. The Council of 100 Plan for Economic Development recommended that
this land be reserved for business parks and industrial development. What
image does this give to visitors ('Turn off at the volcano to get to Sportscore
II?') The outdoor lighting is so garish that it can probably be seen from
outer pace...it certainly illuminates the night sky for miles around it. Com-on
Loves Park, get with a plan!"
Newburg
Village Condominiums on Newburg Road in Cherry Valley
Not only did this development go in on prime open space along the Kishwaukee
River, but soil erosion is a terrible problem, and example of what happens
when construction sites do not have proper erosion and sedimentation controls.
Mud has coated Newburg Road and washed into the river with every rain. The
site is too environmentally sensitive to support this development without
better conservation planning.
The huge, changing billboard at the corner of Perryville and Newburg Road.
Probably the best example of why we need to ban billboards. This distracting
sign can not be ignored by anyone driving south on Perryville or east on Newburg.
A lone pine tree still stands next to it as a reminder of what used to be
on that corner.
